The International Finishing Trades Institute (iFTI), in collaboration with leadership from the Council on Occupational Education (COE), recently visited IUPAT District Councils 46 and 17 in Canada to explore opportunities for COE accreditation of their apprenticeship training programs and the possibility to serve as Instructional Service Centers (ISC) for the iFTI’s COE-accredited Instructor Program.
The collaborative visit provided an opportunity for iFTI, COE, and District Council leadership to examine how the COE accreditation model could potentially apply within the Canadian apprenticeship system. While iFTI and a number of affiliated training programs in the United States have experience with COE accreditation, differences between U.S. and Canadian apprenticeship requirements presented an important question for discussion: Can Canadian finishing trades apprenticeship programs meet COE accreditation requirements while continuing to operate within their existing provincial training systems?
The visits to District Councils 46 and 17 represented an important first step in exploring the feasibility of expanding accreditation opportunities for IUPAT-affiliated training programs in Canada. For iFTI, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to supporting high-quality apprenticeship education throughout the finishing trades and exploring opportunities that include the addition of new ISCs that strengthen training programs, promote continuous improvement, and provide greater recognition of the education and skills our students receive.
