DC 36 Artificial Turf Installation Training: Building a Skilled Workforce

DC 36 in Commerce, CA is host to recent and future field turf installation training. With organization from Sean Padilla and support from the iFTI, a film crew and an instructional designer have attended the training to observe and capture videos and pictures to assist in the development of curriculum in this specialty. The IUPAT Field Turf Installation Training program at DC 26 provides a comprehensive pathway for apprentices to advance their careers in sports turf installation. Covering everything from foundational skills to expert-level proficiencies, the program ensures that trainees are equipped to meet the challenges of modern sports turf installation.

The apprentice levels are structured to offer hands-on training, starting with basic abilities in Level 1 such as handling materials over 50 lbs., following safety guidelines, and learning how to install turf panels and seams. By Level 2, apprentices are more involved in daily tasks like operating power brooms, working with glue crews, and ensuring a clean job site.

As trainees advance to Level 3, they gain experience in leadership, forklift operations, and reading layout plans, while Level 4 focuses on precision tasks like cutting numbers, logos, and handling infill processes. Level 5 and Level 6 apprentices hone skills in blueprint reading, equipment management, and understanding the differences in turf fibers and infill types.

This progressive training ensures that DC 36 and all IUPAT Floor Covering apprentices become not only skilled in the installation process but also leaders in maintaining the quality and longevity of sports turf fields. With an emphasis on safety, precision, and teamwork, this program is shaping the next generation of experts in the field.
